Hi Everyone. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I am fully recovered from my crazy busy week last week and trying to prepare for a new week. First, I have some sad news. We have lost two people here at UCU to suicide. The first person was a thief that was actually jailed here on campus. We have a police substation and a suspect hung himself in the cell last weekend. He was not part of the UCU community, but they had temporarily detained him while investigating a crime on campus. Then, we had a student commit suicide by lighting herself on fire. I found out about this after class this morning when my class representative came and talked with me about it. The girl was her roommate and a first year student. She was sponsored by Compassion. Here is the public announcement from UCU:
To the UCU Community and general public
We are sorry to inform you that one of our students; Adjambo Sunday
Lucy, took her life over the weekend and was buried yesterday, Sunday
October 20th in Bugiri. Adjambo was a Compassion LDP Student offering a
Bachelors in Entrepreneurship and Project Planning at Uganda Christian
University.
She left behind a suicide note explaining that she had been in a relationship
with a boy who then left her and entered another relationship. In her
distress, she tried to get help but it did not work out for her. She
went home to Bugiri and informed her family that she would be taking her
last meal with them. Later that night, she went out into the garden,
poured petrol on herself and lit her body on fire. An alarm was raised
and she was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, just as the Ambulance
reached the hospital, she passed on from her sustained injuries.
The UCU Chaplaincy sent a team of one UCU official and two students to
represent UCU at the funeral. In addition; 70 UCU Compassion LDP
students attended the funeral of their friend and fellow Compassion LDP
student. As a community we are so saddened by her passing and
that she felt there was no other way out of her situation. We ask you to
pray for her family, friends, and classmates in this trying time.
We also humbly ask that we take responsibility for each other. When our
friends are in need or in pain, let us comfort them and stand with
them. The Counselling and Chaplaincy Officer are always there for
consultation, counselling and prayer. However, as a community we can
also support each other in times of need and take seriously the
sufferings of our friends and colleagues. We continue to pray
for UCU in this turbulent atmosphere; for the safety and protection of
our students, staff and community and for the peace of the Lord to
settle on our hearts and bring us comfort even in the most difficult of
time.
Death is a real part of life here, but it is hard to get used to it happening so frequently.
I received my work visa today, so I am free to move about the world for the next year! I will be going to Dubai in December and maybe some other African countries after the first of the year.
This was my lunch today. Beans, rice, and matooke.
This is the second part of my article published today.
The blogpost is short and sweet for today, but just wanted to let you know what was happening in my world.
